Udon Yasan
About This Spot
Stepping into Udon Yasan tucked away on Bourke Street, you’re welcomed by a casual, unpretentious vibe that feels more like a quick reunion than a formal meal. It’s the kind of place where the rhythm slows just enough to savor a comforting bowl of noodles without any fuss or pretense. The space is modest, seating close-knit and practical, encouraging a shared, almost communal experience amid the weekday bustle of Melbourne’s heart.
The mood here is quietly comforting—a refuge for those craving something hearty and familiar. The scent of fresh broth mingling with the subtle chew of house-made udon sets a tone that’s both grounding and inviting. While you might find yourself lining up with a tray, the pace is unhurried once you settle in, making room for small moments of comfort and connection, whether alone or with friends.
What truly shapes the experience is the approachable simplicity of the menu. Each dish feels thoughtfully crafted to showcase fresh noodles paired with broths and toppings that warm the soul. Whether it’s a gently simmered sukiyaki beef bowl, a heartening beef curry udon, or a light, cold noodle dish on a warmer day, the choices reflect a quiet dedication to satisfying, everyday Japanese flavors. Fried treats like takoyaki and tempura add a playful contrast—crispy bites that complement the softness of the noodles and the depth of the broths.
This is not a place for dainty portions or elaborate presentations, but rather a humble gathering spot where affordability meets authenticity. It’s where the fast pace of city life slows down just enough for a genuine moment of contentment. The friendly energy of the staff enhances this feeling—thoughtful in their service, helping to create a space that feels welcoming even on the busiest days.
Udon Yasan’s charm lies in its honest approach to comfort food—nothing is overworked or complicated, just quietly satisfying. It’s the kind of eatery that quietly earns its place in the local rhythm, perfect for when you want to pause, enjoy simple flavors made fresh, and appreciate the joy found in everyday meals.

Give it a 1 star I dare you I genuinely dare you this place has my heart and soul. It’s cheap, it’s fast it’s cosy, you eat at your own pace. It’s genuinely such a nice almost indie restaurant which has such a friendly vibe that’s further supported by the kind staff. I kid you not it is so cheap, for this quality stuff it is absolutely crazy how you can get this for sub $10, not only that they give you free toppings. Literally the only problem with this restaurant is that it might be a bit confusing to order first time around but that doesn’t even scratch its perfection. I love this play get it to 5 stars NOW

Sth warm during the cold day! Definitely comfort food to me! Everything is good, except for the handmade noodles are a little too hard for me! It will be perfect if the noodles are softer! Fried food are great too!

This place is always packed because of how good and cheap the food is. Service is really fast. The udon is fresh and the broth is delicious. You can also get add ons like chicken karaage and all sorts of other fried stuff. The curry udon is also pretty good. It feels like you're tranported back to Japan. The seating is pretty tight and can be a little dirty. But that's ok as long as the food is good. You eat it quick and get out quick so don't be daunted by the long lines.

It feels like the school canteen, lining up with a tray for food ... just a lot better authentic Japanese food at around $10.00 ... you won't find a better freshly made udon in Melbourne. Absolute value for money ... hence the venue and self-service, return the tray guys ... the training you need before going to Japan

A humble little spot serving simple, comforting, and affordable food—a real gem in the city. It’s honestly refreshing to find a bowl of udon soup noodles for under $10 these days, especially when so many everyday things like smoothies can cost $15+ and sandwiches hit $25. Of course, we all love fancy and tasty meals, but sometimes you just want something straightforward, filling, and fairly priced—and this place delivers exactly that. I understand running a business in Australia isn’t easy, with high costs all around, so I truly appreciate what this shop is doing. It can get a bit busy during peak hours, but the turnover is quick and the service moves smoothly. A great option for a quick, satisfying meal in the CBD.

First time trying Japanese Udon here—and I loved it! My friend invited me to check out this place, and I’m glad we did. The prices are super affordable—starting from just $6, with most dishes around $10. Amazing value! We both ordered the beef udon with a soft-boiled egg. The soup was tasty and the beef portion was just right. I’m usually not a fan of thick noodles like udon (I prefer thin or medium ones), but one bowl was more than enough to fill me up, and I still enjoyed it! What I liked: • Free toppings like white radish and spring onions • Self-service system: you choose, pay, find a seat, and return your tray when finished • Super fast service—the food was ready in seconds! • Friendly and responsive staff (thank you for helping when my friend accidentally spilled water!) The space is a bit tight, so it’s more of a quick bite place than one to sit and hang out for long. But overall, I had a great experience. Delicious, affordable, and worth trying!

Brought me back to when I lived in Japan and visited little Udon restaurants. Pick a number, they will add the noodles, broth, crack in an egg, you then pay your $8-12 and add in your little bits of tempura and pickles. Broth was delicious and rich. Highly recommend and surprised such a great value place exists. Give it a shot
